AURORA BOREALIS

What is more awe-inspiring than a spectacular show of Northern Lights? It’s hard to imagine many people in their life will never see this breath-taking Northern treat of brilliantly lit greens and reds. Prime viewing at Gangler’s is late July through September (no darkness before that). We get asked many questions about the ‘Aurora Borealis’ and here’s some interesting information from the great Northern magazine Up Here–

The Lights are produced by the sun’s charged particles blown toward the earth and then pulled into the earth’s ionsphere by our magnetic force, where they electrify atoms. When the atoms are excited enough, they release energy which becomes the lights.

They happen primarily in the high Northern and Southern latitudes due to the earth’s magnetic force being strongest at the Poles. Oxygen atoms emit red and green photons, Nitrogen atoms blue and red.

The Lights are also produced on Jupiter and Saturn. In the Southern hemisphere, they are called ‘Aurora australis. The lights generate tens of billions of watts of electrical power.

DARRELL BAKER

Unless you are from the Midwest, you may not have heard of Darrell Baker. Darrell’s a top-notch veteran guide and seminar speaker from Northern Illinois who has a litany of things on his resume, including guiding in Alaska. He is quickly making a name for himself in the angling world and he will only become more popular. He not only has some of finest angling and teaching skills we have ever seen, he is one of the nicest people we have ever met.

Darrell first fished with us in 2006 and since then our friendship has grown tremendously. In 2007, Darrell personally took a 46 ½” pike, 2 trophy lake trout, and a 28 ½” walleye. In 2008, Darrell along with good friend Art Tang will be hosting two groups with us, at Clifton June 23-30 and at Bain Lake July 26-Aug. 2. For more info on Darrell, his guide service, seminars, or his classes with Hall-of-Fame angler Spence Petros, call 847- 337-5559.

GRAYLING UTOPIA

Whether you are an aficionado or merely curious, the North Seal River is home to the finest Arctic Grayling fishing on the planet.
Grayling fishing comes in many forms and the fish themselves in many different colors. World-wide, grayling range from black to brown to purple in color. North Seal grayling are the most beautiful variation. They appear airbrushed by some wild artist, mottled and speckled, with shades and hues of iridescent blue and purple and colors ranging from electric blue to hot pink on the fins. When hooked, their colors glow fiercely. To catch one is an experience on light tackle or a fly rod. They’ll leap from the water one second than dive into the driving current and dig deep in one of the river holes. A big grayling simply can’t be budged. To hold one for a picture is another experience, like one giant muscle, ready to leap from your hand. That’s why you see so few grayling pictures.

Their setting is therapeutic. Rushing rivers, gorgeous scenery, always worthy of a photo in itself, The North Seal has miles upon miles of world-class grayling water, most never explored.

Size-wise, the North Seal grayling are among some of the world’s largest, producing the provincial record of almost five lbs. Fish average a very chunky 14-18”, many in the 20-22”, and the largest we ever landed a magnificent 24” trophy. Largest in 2007 was a 21” by young Quinn Houser and there were several 20”s caught.

They are one of the unique symbols of the Canadian far North. Majestic beauty, an incredible angling experience.

INTERNET PEACE OF MIND

Our satellite Internet service has become a very popular feature. While many guests first cursed its existence, those same guests have become quick converts. In today’s fast-moving world, escape is a misnomer. With only a few minutes a day, Ganglers guests can quickly stay in touch. The end result, a MORE relaxing day on the water!

In 2007, Internet service was added to Stevens/Nicklin and Maria and we installed a computer in the main lodge for guest use. 2008 will feature the addition of a system to Clifton Lake. All Ganglers camps now offer FREE internet access and the main lodge offers it in every cabin.

To be the best means attention to every detail. Only at Ganglers!

MARBLE EYES MAGIC

One of the classic Canadian angling experiences is sitting on a great walleye hole, surrounded by the solitude of the pine forest, pulling in solid fish after fish. The bonus is the amazing shore lunch that follows. Not even the most exquisite restaurant can match a Canadian shore lunch with fresh-caught walleye.

The North Seal is the absolute Northern border of Manitoba’s walleye fishery and its last unexplored fishery. With great fishing for three other species, our walleye fishery is often overlooked. It amazes all who experience it, including our friends at the In-Fishermen and North American Fisherman. Here fish average 20-26” and we consistently take Master Angler fish, the largest a 32” 12 pounder. The numbers caught can be boggling. the top daily catch was a whopping 308 fish per one boat. Average depth is usually 6’-10’, many times shallower, and jigging 3/8 oz. Mr. Twisters is the method.

Whether you’re a walleye master, or looking for great walleye action, the North Seal is Canada’s sleeper walleye fishery.

UNIQUE TERRAIN

The North Seal River area is a unique ecosystem. Carved by the glaciers, no other area contains more sand eskers including the famed Robertson esker. Only 60 miles from the treeline, the trees are smaller and spread-out, offering a manicured landscape resembling beautiful parkland. Home to wolves, black and grizzly bears, moose, eagles and wolverine, you never know ‘who’ you might bump into.
