2006 ANGLING REPORT-
GREAT, CONSISTENT FISHING
The 2006 season was a pleasant blend of great weather and great angling. The ice-out was the earliest ever recorded with open water on Egenolf Lake May 15. Normal ice-out is end of May. June temps were in the high 80s, eventually settling into consistent 70s throughout the season.
The fishing was excellent and consistent. Patterns were definitely accelerated with late June feeling like mid-July, etc. Over 1200 fish were worthy of Master Angler status. Biggest pike for the year was 47” with several in the 44” to 46” range. Larger pike were hooked and lost but those are fish stories for another day. It would be impossible to calculate the numbers of pike in the 30”- 40” range, the large numbers of these fish is the strength of the North Seal. Several of our larger pike – 44” to 47”- were caught on flies. Walleye fishing was especially good this season with our one day record smashed with a 300- plus catch recorded. Our previous record was 280 fish). Largest walleye for the year was 32” with over a thousand in the 24”-27” class. Largest lake trout was 47”. One guest hooked and lost a lake trout so big it spun him 180 degrees in the boat when it hit and consequently spooled him when it took off. He had just caught a 38” laker minutes before so he knew what a master angler felt like. There were over 60 lakers measuring over 40”
in 06. There were over three dozen grayling caught and released at the 20” or better mark. Grayling fishing was excellent because of consistent bug hatches and consistent water levels. Several of the camps reported 100+ grayling days. The grayling rivers in the North Seal area are post-card perfect. An added bonus, several large whitefish over 20” were caught. The size and number of whitefish on the North Seal is tremendous and certainly as a great compliment to the tremendous North Seal fishery.
Other notable catches to report –
The Bob Burger party at Burnie caught over 130 pike over 30” long. Long-time guest Paul Engel and his party said their walleye fishing was the best ever. They had consistent 22”-26” fish. Mike Engel and a 44” laker too. The Kruse/ Woldman party found early season pike warming in a bay along with big walleyes, catching dozens of huge walleyes in an hour and a half. Days later, they experienced the same with northerns. In a phenomenal hour of fishing, they caught nothing under 30” and had four pike on at the same time.Harvey and Chuck Susswein had a great trip, catching several trophies. Harvey missed the biggest fish of his life estimated at over 50”. It’s got Harvey’s name written on it for next year. Dennis Paustenbach and his father Al had a great trip, with Dennis’ 44” pike and Al with a 45” pike and a 35” lake trout. Kudos to Al McClymonds. He had big lakers of 42”, 38”, 36” plus a 42” pike. Hans Hodell had a 29” walleye. The Suty group had an outstanding August week with several trophies of the various species including Ralph Kokot’s 46” pike. These are just some of the stories, there is simply no other area that offers the TROPHY SIZE and NUMBERS of all FIVE species as the North Seal. It is truly Northern Canada’s most amazing )and unique fishery!
