Minihuk Mech Portage Upgraded

Minihuk Lake is the first lake west of Egenolf,
and the North Seal River runs through it, surging towards Eg. It’s a sizable lake, almost eight miles long and two miles across and boasts great fishing for all four species.

In 2003, we added the Minihuk mechanized portage,  a great addition to North Seal River Lodge. By putting a Polaris Ranger with trailer at the western edge of Egenolf and two boats at the eastern edge of Minihuk Lake, main lodge guests were able to travel to Minihuk from Egenolf at no extra charge. This opened access to a great body of water, one with all four species but in particular a healthy walleye population. The ride is an experience in itself. It travels much of one of our eskers, offering a beautiful scenic experience of the area. Some parts rise 200’ over the surrounding bush  with great overviews of jackpine meadows and bog. It is a customary travel route of the area’s wildlife and moose, bears, wolves, and other locals are often spotted.

The first version of the mechanized portage was effective but we wanted more. Ganglers - style. In 2008, Polaris came out with a new version of the Ranger, with a much longer chassis and two double bench seats. We added other improvements to the trip including construction of a great overnight garage. The last step was to fix a swampy area on the last part of the road. To solve this problem, we flew in 80 treated 2 x 10s and constructed a wooden track over this area. Sounds crazy but it works well. All guests loved the improvements and trips to Minihuk greatly increased. Most importantly, the fishing was great including a 49” pike caught and released in 08 and several excellent walleye forays.

No extra cost and a great experience, giving Ganglers guests access to another great fishery. One more unique part of the Ganglers North Seal River experience.
